Hey
Im building a trackday spec 1380, will be around 130bhp. Im using pot joints, and considering getting some competition driveshafts.. are they necessary?

No. I use standard pot joint etc on my hillclimber with more than 130bhp and 7" very sticky slicks, no problems.

i had a set of jack knight shafts in my grasser, again over130bhp but i snapped one of them clean in half, wasnt impressed.
dad cut and sleeved another for me and hasnt shown any sign of stress since, for what standard ones cost to replace i wouldnt worry about competition ones,

The weak point in the drive shaft is the groove into which the circlip fits to prevent the drive shaft going too far into the CV joint. With powerful engines, the shaft can and will shear at that point of high stress and the competition shafts don't have this groove, they have a large washer tack-welded in place and are made from better quality steel. The pot joints themselves are fine.
