I was a cheapskate and thought would splash out 17 quid on a SIMOTA cone filter looks just like a KN

is there realy a difference in performance between these two filters or are you paying for the name

my car seems to go well with it on

maybe we should ask minispares i believe they sell both

To be honest, they are probably similar materials, as long as the level of filtration is the same, then you really are just paying for a brand name.

Is there any way a test could be conducted on someone's motor to do a write up?

KnN say that they have best filtration in the game, but theyre quite expensive. you would need someone to compare them on a test engine as ^^ he said :P

The stub stack system is a different kettle of fish to a normal K&N. They improve flow characteristics into the carb. I'd like one for my 40DCOE.

IMO the cone type filter is a fairly poor design, especially on a Mini where it's right at the back of the engine sandwiched with the bulkhead, so all the help you can get with air feed and flow is great. Nor are normal K&Ns as good as they're advertised to be, I think ITG are much better on the whole. With K&N you do only seem to be paying for the name.

There probably is some improvement in the K&N cone compared to a cheap cone, but it will be pretty negligible I would have thought.

Hasn't it been proved that a K&N/'performance' filter element that fits in the original air filter with some well placed drilled holes is better for performance than a cone filter straight on to the carb?

Kieth Calvers has an article comparing the stock filter with holes to the K&N cone filter on a 998. The stock air cleaner with holes was the winner. My own dyno testing showed the K&N cone filter 3 hp down over no air filter at all on my 1380. I have used several other filters, including a modified stock air cleaner, that did not impact power at all. The stock air cleaner does a great job with a few extra holes in the side.
