I'd go for one of Phils heads, the do the goods and are probably more cost effective, and Phils a good chap to deal with in my experience.

the turbo compresses air, and as a result the air gets hot which is bad, the intercooler is just a big rad that you feed the turbo into, it cools the air, and then you feed it into the carb, or in your case invection throttle body,

the 2wd sierra corworth intercooler is a popular choice on minis, as it slots in in front of the head pretty well, but essentially any thing is better than nothing,

Is getting a turbo to fit an spi any more difficult than a carbed model?

erm, it should be easier i think,

one of the main PITA jobs IMO is to run a fuel feed and return, the SPI already has these.

induction wise you can either whack a carb on it, or run the SC injection that youve mentioned. if you do go injection you'll need to change the fuel pump as the SPI one wont provide enough pressure (and wouldent for much more than about 12psi on a carb) you can swap it for an in tank pump from somthing like a fiesta.

I'd say it might be an idea to get it up and running on a carb and dizzy then swap to the SC kit.

Id rather just do it all in one hit, can i just whack a bigger injector in and upgrade the fuel pump?
I don't want to spend the money on that fancy injection kit. Hehe.

And can a big intercooler ever be too good?

Ah, your thinking of driving the SPI manifold and injector with an aftermarket ECU?

you'd need to add some form of "lid" to feed in boost pressure, which I think could be a problem to get to seal,

Unfortunatly I dont know much about the SPI injectors, I do l know they were meant to run at 1 bar, and flow approx 510cc which about enough for 90hp at full flow. I dont know how they would cope woith boost or higher fuel pressure, also some ecu's might have problems driving them due to their low resistance.

as for intercoolers, generally the bigger the better, and it can never be too good, at a bar of boost the air temp coming out of the turbo is likly to be up over 100deg C, a decent intercooler will scrub at least half that heat,
