I am looking to replace my plastic brake master cylinder with the correct metal tin type for my 1964 MK1. I have a spare master cylinder with the metal tin, but I have no idea if it is the clutch or brake master cylinder. What is the difference? Does anyone have a side by side comparison they could show? I tried looking on websites, but usually they show the same image for the brake and the clutch master.

Many thanks!!

very easy way to tell is to hold the cylinder in front of you with the part were the brake pipe connects to is facing you, if the cap is on the right its a clutch one and if the cap is on the left its a brake one.

I don't think this is a true statement?

Sorry to sound thick, I can't visualise this! Do you mean hold it with the mounting flange across you?

According to my mini manuals, they are slightly different. The clutch master cylinder has an internal spring which pushes directly against an end plug, where the thin pipe connects on. But the brake master cylinder also has a non return valve on the underside of it's end plug and this fits into the end of the spring.
Hope this helps.

sorry for using your picture but this shows the brake pipe coming out of the cylinder nearest to the front of the car, now look at the filler cap, the clutch cylinder has the cap on the right and the brake one on the left.
