tomorrow i'm gonna go out and buy something to help protect the car over winter, as i noticed grit on the road this morning :(. will hammerite be ok just to chuck on? is it any good at protecting the car from salt and weathering? also where can i get waxoyl from? and does it have to be heated before using? and i'm thinking of painting the subframe so would i need to wirebrush it all down before hand?
any tips or anything would be very helpful?

I have no experience with using either yet but I do know you can get Waxoyl from Halfords, you can buy it in a big tin and brush it on or you can buy the pressured sprayer type kit and get a smaller tin with it and can spray it on, they both cost around the £30 to get but you obviously get less with the sprayer for your money, but then you can spray it into hard to reach areas, so it's a 50/50 situation.

mhmm. i have looked into the waxoyl, but i found some under body sealant which contained it and thought maybe that would be better value for money.

Can't buy it off the shelf but look at: www.bilthamber.co.uk The stuff you want is Dynax S50 for cavities and dynax UB or UC for underbody (they also do deals on kits with enough to do a car). Since switching to this I have used nothing else. I was having to check and patch waxoyl EVERY year but the Dynax stuff has been on my Daily drive MGB for three years without a hint of gaps or any problems at all. The MGB is like a Mini for rust and gets driven every day in every weather and our works caretaker LOVES his grit spreading trolley. It always gets top marks in magazine reveiws. Great stuff (and no I don't work for them by the way!, just love good stuff from small companies with great customer service)

Thin the paint on stuff with a bit of white spirit and keep the spray upright or it will clog - good luck but be patient as those spray cans can be B*******s for clogging! I think I got about a quarter out of the last one I used before getting peed off and binning it. Thats why I tried the Dynax.

Not a huge fan of the waxoyl underseal as it stays sticky which in a way is good but also means you get covered in the stuff every time you work under the car lol. I've just got some Ankor wax which is similar to waxoyl but a bit thinner, which means you don't have to superheat it to spray it without it clogging the gun and it should run into the nooks and crannys better.

I would of got stonechip or waxoyl but under seal is not bad.
I would say you will use 1 of them cans to each wheel arch though so you may need more. The pot should cover the underneath of the car.

EDIT: also if the cans do clog, putting them in hot water for a while sometimes un clogs them.
Also if your spraying waxoyl with a gun i always put the waxoyl in boilling hot water for 10 minutes before spraying it and its fine.

I've just done underneath mine with underseal.

Just make sure you you wirebrush and treat/paint any dodgy looking areas first.

1 can for each wheel arch? i did the whole car and i still got half left, and the spray still has abit in. all the arches are proper thick with the stuff. made sure it was thick because of stones and water. :)
