I have just replaced my choke cable on a SU HS2 carb. Can anyone advise on the required adjustment before clamping the wire? I read somewhere that the first 1/2" of movement is only for fast idle control. The choke wire is the old push-pull style which does not lock by twisting. Thanks.

As long as there's a tiny bit off slack to ensure the choke always returns fully. It's the choke mechanism on the carb that's in 2 parts - 1st part moves the cam to open the throttle for fast idle, pulling the cable further moves the 2nd part for mixture enrichment. If you look there's probably a little arrow on the choke cam, you adjust the fast idle screw (to increase the rpm) when it's lined up with the arrow.

OK that's fine, Ethel. Connected up the cable but the choke knob doesn't stay out by itself beyond the initial 1/2" - when pulled out further it just springs back to the 1/2" position. I've tried adjusting the slack at the carb in various positions but it doesn't seem to make any difference to the choke knob behaviour. Perhaps a twist lock choke cable would be better(?). Any thoughts? Thanks.
