Hi

My mini is a standard 850cc, and I am about to attatch the gearbox to the engine. Before I do this, I will temporarily attatch the transfer case to the gearbox and measure the drop gear end float, and adjust the thrust shims as required.

What is the correct value for the clearance I need to allow for? Once I know this I will then know if I need to buy new thrust washers (shims)

Thanks

John

I usually work on between 0.002" and 0.007".

I aim for 3-4 for helical, and a bit looser for straight cut.

The thickness of the gasket has an effect - they come in various thicknesses. Better a bit loose rather than too tight!

Hi
I have measured the gap with feeler gauges and it is 0.0035 (Helical gears)

So, this sounds ideal then?

Cheers

IF the bolts/nuts are fully tight and the gasket compressed......

I have a vague recollection that when you picked up the box, we sorted the idler shimming then... or is this a different one ?

Hi Guessworks

That was a different gearbox for a differrent engine. This is the hybrid box you built. Excellent box by the way!
