Hi,

What wheel is better? 5x10 or 6x10? are the tyres more expensive on one of them and which handles best?

Tyres, assuming you're going for 165s, are the same.
And 5x10 will handle better due to less weight.

I very much doubt you would notice the weight difference between a 5 and a 6 when driving. You would notice a difference in offset or track

I would have said 6inch would handle better. More surface area = more grip. I may be wrong though. Wont be the first time.

You get no more surface area as the tyre width is still 165 mm. The only mechanical difference is that the mean centre line of the wheel will move out 1/2", assuming the same offset between mounting face and inner rim position. This slightly alters the steering geometry which is better with the 5" wheel and is why the 4.5" wheel was always so popular.
Also, more surface area does definately not mean more grip. A specific type/pattern of tyre will have an optimum down pressure onto the road. This is expecially important in the wet where a wide tyre can simply not have enough down-force to clear the water - hence 'aqua-planing' and sliding. If you look at tyres fot ice and snow they are narrow.
And remember, the wider the tyre the more aerodynamic drag so the less top speed. For best top speed in a straight line you need narrow tyres and no wheel arch extensions.

The dilema i am having is that i have recently brought a GT project to do over the winter and i have some ABS Wood & Pickett replica arches to go on it. i am going to fit some cooper s discs and i dont want the wheels to stick out further than the arches.

From what i have read so far the 5x10's seem to be the better choice.

The discs will push the wheels out a bit so, hence why i am tempted to just go for the 5x10's. They also seem to be a more popular wheel.

5" x 10 are great. I run a set on my 1964 'S' and just get away without any wheel-arch extensions at all.

so 5x10's wont be wide enough to fill the arches unless i use spacers (the arches are 2.5" wide), so 6x10's may fill them a bit better?

It even depends on the offset of the wheel, ask the dealer what the offset is like, then make your own calculation.

Even the original 5x10 mambas that i had protruded past standard group 2 arches. So as jaydee said check with the supplier as to the offset of the wheels.

in my own personal experience the 6x10 were fine as long as the extra 1" is all on the outer part
as in 1" extra. my split rims were 3 piece and all the 1" was not on the outside this was on race car

I realy do not think a 6" rim with the extra 1" on the OUTSIDE will be as good as a 5" rim
with the same tyre for all the reasons cooperman says

however the do look nicer

I have 5" on mine but would like to TRY some 6" see what happens as as far as i can see all the wheels seem to
have that extra 1" on the OUTSIDE

5.5 would be nice

what size wheels do you think are on this mini. i thing the arches are ABS W&P replicas. cant tell if they are 5 or 6's.

any ideas, its the same kind of look as i am trying to achieve.
