Hello I was wondering if anyone could tell me if i am able to fit an A-plus engine to a Pre A+ remote change (not rod change) gearbox because i have been told that the end covers will not match up and wasnt sure if this was true or not
Cheers

Yes - of course you can. But you must use a primary gear that matches up with the A type drop gears. Well done using a remote control - it's a FAR nicer gearchange. I do however suggest you get the 'competition' mount for the remote extension.

Thanks for clearing that up, someone previously told me that the end plates wouldnt fit haha. I ve never used the remote type before but have jus brought a rolling shell with the floor pan for the remote change and the person i brought the mini from has kept the engine out of it but isnt intending on using the gearbox so has agreed to let me have

You'll need the pre-A+ transfer gear case, pre A+ primary gear and pre A+ transfer gear then It'll all go together easily. Don't forget to check the transfer gear end-float before bolting it all together. Not only are A+ transfer gears of different gear shape, the bearing bosses are larger diameter too.
As 'bmc....' says, the early remote change really is the best and was only dropped to save on production costs. With the competition rear mount it's an excellent engine steady as well.

One thing worth doing when fitting the remote gearchange and matching gearbox is to change the bushes in the transfer shaft which transmits the gear linkage movement to the knuckle joint on top of the diff housing. I just got a gearbox back from a fairly well-known builder who neg;lected to do this (no, not that nice Mr. GuessWorks!) and I had to replace these bushes as the shaft was like the proverbial 'thingy in a bucket'. I always replace with off-the-shelf 'Oilite' bushes, 3/4" OD x 1/2" ID x 1" long, then no reaming is needed and, if soaked in oilo for 24 hours before fitting they last forever. Grease the grease point for that shaft before fitting the engine as it's very hard to reach when the engine is in and one tends to forget.

That transfer shaft needs to sit in good bushes as if it's sloppy it spoils that excfellent gearchange.
That remote change is far better than the 'Quick-Graunch' gearchange so long as those bushes are as new. It can be a bit of a devil to remove the old ones. I file them locally with a small rotary file, then use a very thin chisel to split down one side. Then just pull them out with long nosed pliars.
