hi guys,

im having some issues, my girlfriend has a mini, and no one is entirely sure whether its a 1 litre or a 1275.

someone told me it was a 1275 (therefore having an engine swap at some point) and they could tell by the rocker box, but im not convinced still..

heres some photos anyway, hope they can answer this!

Hi Thooooom
A good start (if you can read it) is to get the engine number off the block then try hereAttached File  A_Series_Engine_numbers.htm   50.56K   26 downloads
It's not saying that it hasn't been modified in some way but its a pointer to what it is.

yerp defo a 998, quickest most obviosu ones to look for are.....: 1. thermostat angle 998 is like that one above a 1275 is turned more closwise so flatish across the front of the head. 2. heater tap/take off angle... a 998's is practically front to back whereas a 1275 is angled at about 10-5 oclock angle 3. tappet chest covers and breather on n/s of engine next to rad, dnt get a series and a+ series engines confused tho as the a series had tappet chest covers.4. engine code "normally" i say this lightly as there are varients but "normally" the first 2 digits of the engine code on the deck of the block depict the engine size i.e 12a 12h for 1275 10h for 1098 and 99a for 998 and so on... hope this helps in future :)

As surfbluegarage says the angle of the thermostat housing is a good pointer to a 998 but someone may have dumped a different head on.
Tappet chest covers = 998. none = 1275, but not always, there are so many variants.
You don't know what is under all that thick red paint really, give the engine code a try when you can, they are less likely to have changed that.
The reason why they painted it red is that is what 1275 engines were when they came out of Longbridge, they have done it to fool you buddy

2nd that. 1st thing I do is look at the gap between the rocker cover and the thermostat housing. Is there room for the sacred extra head stud/nut in the gap? Only possible on a 1275 head. Obviously no in this case. OK, if it's got a 1275 head on then thats different but no one fits a 998 head on a 1275 .

4th that. It's A+ from the position of the alternator rear mounting point. It's 998 because of the short head and tappet chest breather.
