Hi...I've been replacing the core plugs and oil gallery plugs on my engine...the core plugs went in no problems but the oil gallery plugs seem to be a bit loose...I pressed them in untill they went tight but they are a long way into the holes. Way further than the old ones I took out. Are there different types or sizes?

I am not familiar with the sizes involved but I remember that when I worked on my engine I tapped the holes and fitted them with threaded pipe plugs.

Oh! I didnt know you got threaded ones...thats a good idea...but its a bit late now..Im just a bit worried that they might pop out. Does anyone know if they come in different sizes..maybe ive fitted the wrong ones..

The pressed type can be a problem if the holes are a bit oversize. I had one leak once.
If you can get hold of some of the old solid tapered ones they are better. I'm thinking of getting some turned up in brass, but just haven't got around to it yet.
I've used 'Loctite Bearing Lock' on some that have seemed a little loose and that seems to work fine.
The current pressed ones are a bit 'cheap & nasty'. Typical later Rover in fact.

I think you need to locktite them in

http://www.ukclassic...-brass-plug.asp

that is the only info I can find on them so I should imagine they are all the same size

personally I have got mine tapped locktited & plugged with a Allen grub screw's

& gallery's flushed

Hi,

It's already been said but I know that Bob Sollis (Miglia racer) has them tapped as Doug has said.

I found the same problem this time, but 18 months ago I did another and they were perfect so there is perhaps a bad batch around. Minispares? I use Loxxeal which is an LPG assembly seal/locking compond also for steam and oil and higher temp's. That wont let go!! but as you say,a little further in and they are tighter.

If you going to tap them, make sure you thoroughly wash out the oil galleries before putting in the grub screws.. last thing you want is a little bit of swarf hiding in there...

and while thinking ahead... good place to tap one for an oil temp sender..

I thought I would add to this post rather than start another, hope the OP doesn't mind.

I have managed to remove the oil gallery plugs from my block (std A) which were the solid brass type.

Drilled & tapped

My question is regarding the replacement. I've read / seen that tapping & fitting a threaded plug is the best option? I'm sure one I read suggested that the same threaded plug as used in the inlet manifold where there is no servo could be used.

Any suggestions / recommendations welcomed, and if anyone has a drill / tap / thread spec, that would be superb

Thanks in advance

Steve

never needed to faf around with drilling and tapping...

loctite some new ones in - job done... if you are worried they are still gonna pop out then stake the sides of the hole with a chisel....

The servo hose connections I have seen are fairly large, much larger than the gallery plugs I replaced with pipe plugs. From what I remember I used a combination of 1/8 NPT and 1/4 NPT plugs as necessary.
