My box section because me nout since my mates got an engineering company so lets me have all my steel for nout.
I've seen some minis with tow bars and they don't seem to look right so i think i'm gonna make a custom one and make it easily removable as i won't be usin the trailer that often.
I'm thinkin of getting two pieces of box that fit perfectly inside one another and then fit the tow ball to the end of the small one and fix some brackets to the other one and weld it to the car, then slide one inside the other and put some bolts throught the two so i can easily unbolt it.....

If you make your own you will find thats is illegal as all tow bars have to be tested, thats why you cannot fit one to a post 1990 (?) Mini

I thought that only cars after a certain year have to have tested tow bars, as later cars also have stated towing limits. I doubt that the companies that make them for minis have them tested?? How would you be able to tell?? Will it be kitemarked or somethin?? Some of the towbars i've seen for sale at shows are certainly very poorly made and mines gonna be well made...

hmmm...you always like to confuse thinigs don't you siggy!

I think you will find that all bars produced after a certain date have to be tested (poss EEC reg), there will be a plate fastened to the car.

They were never made (tested bars) for Mini's because there was no demand for tow bars, 90% of the later cars sold were usually as a second car.

What would you rather happen, me point out these things to you or you spend time and money building a bar, trailer ect and then to be pulled by the police or when you try to sell it buyers point them out to you?

Ok then - cheers for that :D

Looks like i'll have to make my own anyways. i don't think police would be particularly bothered about checking it out but if no one makes legal ones then there no other option really?

Looking back I think I confused you a lot. Tow bars were not made for cars built after 199? You will be OK on your 73

yep, its after 1998 ('s' reg ) , you can fit tow bars to earlier mini's, and they dont have to be ec approved, but after '98 all tow bars have to be ec approved.

if you go to any of the tow bar manufacturers sites (brink, witter, etc.), you'll find they have the regs on tow bars there

Yeah was looking at one earlier who were selling mini tow bars for 37.95 excluding vat so i think i'll be making my own!

Did a bit more to it this afternoon. Cut the door bins out which took an hour or two since i had to get them out intact so i can use them in my mk3. I also cut some of the back seat out and cut the rear pillars down as they were cutting into my tarp so it was raining in a bit....

Next have got to weld another strengthening bar in and then weld the front crossmember onto the front of the trailer floor, i'm using this since its pretty light and is the right shape already, i'll need it to keep my floor rigid.
I'll keep you posted....

How did this trailer do? Did it get finished?
I made a 2 seater Mini a few years back with the roof welded on at waist height. Unfortunately, it had to sit outside until I got the garage and ended up too rustwormed at the front.... yep, you've guessed it - it's now a trailer, and the roof bit is a hinged lid! Electrics need done, but I was in a hurry to get it out of the garage to stop the same fate for my newer baby..
