As the title suggests, what size socket would I need to undo the wheel hub castle nut? Don't want to use guesswork when buying a socket haha :D
It's the disc type by the way.

I'm following this guide http://www.theminifo...?showtopic=9930 to renew the brakes.

Cheers,
Adam

I'm pretty sure it's a 36mm. But don't quote me on that, wait until someone else replies. :)

Socket is 15/16", I will just go and double check but I`m pretty sure it is.

Sorry my mistake, the back one is 15/16 but I don`t know about the fronts sorry.

It's not 15/16", quite a bit bigger than that!

Infact let me go out and see if I can find it in my garage. I had to buy one to from Halfords, because I didn't have one that big :) Not promising anything though.

Right, just been out to check, it's actually a 34mm. I got it from Halfords;

Made a double post so that you'd see the change. Easier to see than just an edit :)

Original size is 1.5/16" AF (Inch and five sixteenths). This equates to 33.33mm, so your 34mm will be a bit sloppy...

Imperial all the way: this metric stuff will never catch on...

and if its anything like mine the other day the socket size is the least of your problems, you will also need a bar and a mile long to get enough pressure on it.

Well my castle nuts were pretty tight, and that size seemed to be pretty much spot on, without any slip. So :P

It might be either 1 & 5/16" or 34mm. Both nuts are available and are interchangeable but it is not adviseable to use the metric tool on the slightly smaller imperial nut, it will damage it eventually and can easily slip which leads to injury when you are loading something to a couple of hundred foot pounds.

I have seen other metric sizes quoted on this forum, but they are inadvisable. For instance, 13mm is too sloppy on the very common 1/2 inch heads on the many 5/16 UNF bolts used on the Mini.

As Dan points out, it is best to use the correct spanner, always, which is usually imperial on a Mini. Rounded nuts and bolts are a real pain to deal with, and best avoided.

It is not so easy to buy imperial socket sets and spanners now, but they are still around. But it is more difficult for older cars with Whitworth/BSF, where neither a metric nor A/F imperial spanner will fit properly.

It is much more pleasant to work with correctly fitting tools.
