Ok so a year Tommorow I've had my project and today I finally got the engine running! Yay! But there is now a puddle of water on the floor in my garage I'm guessing it's from the water pump? Are they easy to change and is this most likely the cause?

Are you sure it is even the water pump? could be coolant coming from the overflow pipe on the radiator? it does this when filling it up, especially on a new engine. It will stop once it has settled down.

Check that first!

The engine was sat for 2 years before we put it in. Cleaned oil and water and new head gasket. No I dont know where it's coming from yet I just saw a big puddle on floor. I can't get my hands in at moment because on Xmas day I was washing up n took all the skin on my finger off down to the bone so it's keep it clean at mo

Even if it is sat there and not run, untill you do run it the coolent wont flow around the engine. If you start it, and it carries on you should easily see it coming from the overflow pipe behind the radiator. If you have a clear one like me, you will see it running through it.

Yeah maybe! if it is a water pump, it will most likely be the bearings gone on it. Try rocking it, any movement and water will be coming from a hole underneath (same problem I had a couple of months ago)

First problem I had the day after bringing my mini home was the water pump, best thing to do is to dry everything off best you can and run it, while watching for any drips. Put a cloth or a bit of paper in hard to get to places and see if they are wet. If it is the water pump, it will be dripping from the hole on the bottom of the water pump shaft casting as mentioned above.

Be careful when buying a new water pump as there are a few different ones. The most important difference is if your mini has a bypass hose or not. If it does, it will be a short rubber hose running from the water pump. If not then the casting will be there still, but it will be blocked off. This confused me a bit when I was choosing the right one but once you figure it all out its quite easy.

Changing it is quite easy if your handy with spanners. It can be a tight squeeze getting the radiator out but patience and it will be fine. If the bottom hose hasn't been off for a while then you may have bother with this, as I did. Once you get the radiator off its all simple and straight forward, if the water pump doesn't want to part from the engine block then a couple of taps with a soft hammer should release it. Before installing the new one make sure that all the old gasket has been removed before fitting the new one, otherwise it'll weep out when you get it all back together. Again be careful when putting the radiator back in as its easy to knacker up the fins.

I hope this post will be helpful, its all based on what I did when I replaced my water pump.
