My 92 mini 998 has gradually started to run worse and worse.
Currently it runs really badly unless you leave the choke on, if driving along without choke when you come to slow down to a junction for example, usually the revs will dip right down and it will stall.
The car has never really idled properly, and even if left to run at a standstill, usually if revved it will also cut out
any suggestions on what might be the problem?

Have you given the carbs a clean recently? Also what's the idle speed?

not got an air leak anywhere or anything if its getting worse? common problem with the 998's if its still got the hs4 on it is the butterfly spindle leaks air in as it wears. its on the left hand side of the carb you can see a copper lookings rod coming out of the side wiggle it side to side or up and down to see if theres play. air gets sucked in here post butterfly which weakens the mixture.
adjusted the mixture/ serviced the engine regular at all?

Thanks for the replies, I haven't had time to have a good look yet, I suspect the carb may well need a good clean, it doesn't get hot and the idle speed is a bit erratic it can vary from 1000rpm to 1500rpm.
It's booked in to a garage next week to have a few other jobs don't so will get them to have a look at the carbs etc.
Also yesterday it cut out completely whilst driving and when I tried to restart no ignition lights would work and it was completely dead, it was only when in anger I tapped around behind the steering wheel it fired up so I suspect there may well be an electrical fault aswell

It may be just an electrical fault if a poor connection has added resistance to the coil's wiring.
Other simple possibilities are a manifold air leak (engine breather pipe is a favourite), or a blocked air filter.

I would say that you have 2 different issues, the inability to run without choke is without doubt an air leak between the carburettor and the cylinder head, every joint needs to be checked; spraying brake cleaner on the manifold joints whilst the engine is running will give a decent indication. When you spay the cleaner on the leaking joint you will notice that the engine note will change. This fault will not be caused by the electrical system. Your other fault will need to diagnosed seperately, I would start with earthing points and then move on to loose connections.
Hope this helps.

thanks for your helpful replies, its going into the garage on friday to have the suspension looked at as i hit a bloody big pot hole and its now sitting lower on one side than the other, and causing the 7x13 drivers side wheel to rub when turning, i got the wheel off and couldnt see anthing visibly bent or broken so it seems a bit odd., perhaps the shock absorber has broken, but there was no leaks from it anything like that. HOPEFULLY not an expensive job.
will have the other problems looked at the same time and hopefully get it sorted once and for all .

Get a can of carb cleaner from any local auto store and spray it around the carburettor where it mates to the engine, the revs will then let you know if you've got a leak.

Just got it back from the garage, had the choke sorted and a breather pipe replaced on the carb, and so far all seems to be well
