I'm making a tool to remove the castellated ring nut thingy that holds the hub on, on my old Lancia. I've made a piece to fit the nut from a stainless steel disc about half an inch thick I had lying about and I need to weld a 3/4" hollow mild steel bar to it. It must be good and strong as these things are on VERY tight. I have a normal mig welder and an arc welder. Any tips?

Not usually a great sucess, but you could use some dissimilar rods for the arc welder. They usually glue most stuff together.

Theres a bit about it on the mig welding forums chap, most seem to prefer using 312 stainless rods with an arc welder it seems!

What grade of stainless is it? I've welded 430 and 304 to mild steel before (using a MIG) and never had any problems, but it wasn't subject to as concentrated force as you would be.

Cheers, Shifty. At £35 or more for a pack I think I'll take it to my local Ironworkers after the xmas break and get it done by people who will do it right first time!

I've made various tools and things using a mixture of stainless and mild. Never had any problem with strength or penetration. (using mig and arc)
Would never attempt to weld stainless and mild body panels together though

You can weld stainless and mild steel together with no issues at all with the correct wire or rods, we do it every day.Cheers, Shifty. At £35 or more for a pack I think I'll take it to my local Ironworkers after the xmas break and get it done by people who will do it right first time!
I'd suggest you take it to a local fabrication/plating workshop where they'll probably have to right wire or/and rods to put a proper weld on your tool

Shame you're so far away, I'd have done it you for nowt.
