I am putting my mini back together after its respray and i tried fitting the window runners to the passenger and driver door windows today. These runners are the ones at the bottom of the windows that the winder wheels sit in. They are more of a rail than anything. They are secured to the window by squeezing them on over a rubber strip.I have tried fitting them today but no matter what i do, they wont grip the glass and pull off easy.I am now thinking of going to the local glazing shop and asking them to drill two holes in the glass for each rail and then i will bolt the rail through these holes. Has anybody done this before and what do ye think of the idea. The one thing i am afraid of is that it would weaken the glass but there prob wont be massive pressure on it. It seems like a better idea than trying to force it on over the rubber strip. By the way, the rails are new and so are the rubbers.Cheers

I wouldn't drill the glass, it will probably crack over time or even when you tighten them up!

Try crimping the runners slightly with some mole grips then tap them on the glass, they should grip. you can even put some silicon sealant in the channels to help secure the glass when set

Are the rails and rubbers fully fitted onto the glass?? they do need some serious pushing on to seat correctly or they need pinching together if they are too wide. I had to really really shove mine onto one of Project Erms door windows.

I was thinking that the glass could crack too over time but you would never know too, they might be fine. The holes would be about ten mm, if not more, from the bottom of the glass so they might be fine. Also, i wouldnt be tightening the bolts to the extent that they would crack the glass. I would only give them a bare squeeze to keep them in place.I would sandwich the rubber strip between the rail and the glass still to stop vibrations and to protect the glass. I have tried glueing these rails on before on a previous car with tiger seal but it didnt last long.

Sonikk4, the rails do not go on fully. They fit about 3/4 of their full depth onto the glass and then refuse to move anymore. I have even given them a good beating with a rubber mallet but they just wont go on any further.I reckon two bolts per rail would be alot more effective than just the rubber strip as there is no way that the rail can fall off the glass then. Also it is alot easier than spending an hour or two trying to squeeze on the rails :D

Usually the inside of the u shape that grip the window goes rusty and the metal becomes thin loosing it's tension and won't grip the rubber onto the glass. If squeezing the runner together does not help grip then get a new set of runners. They are not that dear, and there is nothing worse than a newly rebuilt mini which the windows fall into the doors when you wind them. There is also someone who does one piece Stainless Steel runners that look useful.

When you are assembling them they will take a bit of effort to push over the glass but it's worth doing properly.

That is your problem...

I used some **cough** personal lubricant on the rubbers [snigger] and the rails, put the rubber half over the glass (not fully down) then added the rail. Pushed as hard as I could [snork] hen used a rubber mallet to knock them home...

Hi there I had the same problem as you I went to the extreme of buying new runners and rubbers but the rubber supplied is totally different to the origional and wouldn't allow the rail to go fully on, in the end I pinched some u-trim of off my kit car wheel arches the type to cover sharp edges it has tiny sort of staples in it which grip once applied this worked spot on for the windows to, the trim fitted snugly in the runner and gripped the glass nicely could be worth a go!?
