Just been Having a chat with my Uncle, hes well into his car mechanics and that. Built pleanty of engines etc.

I was telling him about how ive just got a 1275 put in my mini, And he said that the best engine to put in a mini is the 1750 Austin Maxi Engine.

He said that they put re-enforced drive shafts on it, And it droped straight into the front of it...

Has anybody got any pictures of an Austin Maxi 1750 engine?

Ive seen the car, but I wana see the engine.

No it's not an A series engine. The whole power unit can just about be fitted into a Mini though and it was quite a popular mod 20 or 30 years ago I believe. However while parts are plentiful and easily available both in standard and performance spec for A series engines, the Maxi's O series engine is not so lucky. Parts for it are getting quite hard to find I think.

Thats the Maxi's E series engine, wink wink.

I have one of the 1500 veriety and keeping it to one side while I collect all the bits to rebuild it. Managed to get some twin carbs on the right manifold for it, courtesy of a good fellow of TMF, you know who you are.

Aparently the 1700 did not produce much more power than its smaller 1500 sister and hence why Austin fitted a restrictor to limit the 1500 power figure to make the 1700 look good from a sales point of view.

whats happened to all the smilies, huh

First line suggests he hasn't a clue what the hell he's talking about, and there is a faint unpleasant smell in the air
Second line is sounding more and more 'whiffy'
Third line confirms it.... Total BS

Ahh well, Im only going by what he said.

To him, Somthing "droping" into place could mean Major operation. Hes changed so many engines in the past and that. So I dont know.

I was just wondering if it was possible thats all.

Binge, i'm afraid i'm with dave here as he beat me to it , but your unc really does sound like most mechanics i have come a cross, and unfortunatly i'm not being polite .it would be a truly bad move to even consider it ,

Does it fit on the Aseries Subframe?

If u r gonna do an engine conversion, u might as well go all the way, and 100bhp is possible on an A-series without the difficulty of finding parts.
A VTEC, k-series or a bike engine would be far more worthwhile i think.
The only reason i can think of doing this would b if u really wanted to be different, i dare say there arnt many of these around.
The other options look much prettier too :D

The only good thing about the maxi engine is that the diff output shafts are exactly the same distance apart as they are on the mini gearbox enabling use of standard legnth shafts. But thats it, everything else is a problem because of its size, it sits higher under the bonnet and theres no room for a side mount rad. There may be lots more problems that i havent seen yet but thats because i dont have an empty engine bay and also the fact that I am not considering trying this for a very long time. Thinking of using an auto subframe as its a but wider.

These are only thoughts as I have not looked at it that much, what with other things on the go :D

Absolutely no point in using an old E-series boat anchor, if you want a conversion get one that has decent power like a B16a Honda or a "Redtop" Vauxhall unit. Also you can still get parts for them.
