Oh and it looked so nice in the first photo! It's good you know it's true self underneath the paint and you're getting it sorted properly. I'm going to cry if I find a hole like that when in MPi when the windscreen comes out!

When I stripped my MPI I thought that the middle of the windscreen wasnt too bad, when i got the screen out I could have pulled the top dash rail off there was that much rust!

Its such a shame our cars seem very prone to rust in this area and removal of the wings has to be done to replace the scuttle panel >_<

tell me about it!

you could see through into the car from the corner of my scuttle and through to the door hinge from both of my inner wings .. it all looked quite pretty until i went poking with the screw driver!

What do people think about the repairs made to the dash rail as i was away when the work was carried out ?

Would it have been better to replace the panel ?

It depends on how the rest of it is holding up.

There's a 3 layer sandwich of spot welded metal there, dash rail, bulkhead and scuttle panel all waiting for moisture to creep in around the welds. If you have a look at the early pics of Spike's tear down, after removing the scuttle panel there's plenty of surface rust on the bulkhead's top lip. The dash rail behind has not only perforated in several places but there's plenty of surface rust looking down into the seam with the bulkhead. When it's removed I'm sure I'll have to cut out some rot in the bulkhead and replace with new metal.

Personally I'd have replaced the dash rail since a new one's about £30 and you can ensure you remove all the rust from it and the bulkhead in the process. However I'm doing it myself (takes forever) and my labour is free.............It's different when you're paying garage rates. Hopefully the bodyshop will treat the seam with the appropriate stuff before replacing the dash rail trim. Likewise your front end.
