HI,

I would like some advice, what is the easiest, and best way to spray arches?

I currently have ABS W&P arches do they need to be primed, de-greased, panel wiped, tac wiped...?

Is it just a case of putting some primer on and giving spray a couple of coats of gloss black?

Thanks

Josh

Are they painted?

If they are then get the shine out of the paint with some p240 grit then after you feel happy with that you tack rag it (so grease and dust is off, its like a shammy leather sorta material) then you can etch prime them - so light and smooth coats of primer, spray then leave 10 minutes, spray leave 10 minutes and so on unit you feel a uniform finish is achieved, any imperfections you can get out with p400 or p600 wet and dry. If you do need to prime again then remember to tack rag it :)

When it coems to paint check the surface for drips and imperfections first - then spray away - using same techniques as primer, any imperfections p600 wet and dry sand it back.

When using wet and dry paper use washing up liquid and water to stop the paper getting cacky!

Hope that helps - i am only speaking from experience so not quoting something out a book, this method worked fine for my fibreglass bumper :)

They arent sprayed at the moment, just the black plastic they came in. and they are plastic. so it is a case of just giving them a rub down with p240 and tack ragging it, etching and finally a couple coats.

Cheers

Thats what I did with my fibreglass sports pack ones. They came with the standard black gel coat on so I just rubbed them back a bit, primed and sprayed as detailed above. You can either lay them on newspaper or I have seen them hung on a board to be sprayed to make sure that you dont miss any patches.

i did what malynch27 did and it was fine, until i decided to honk it up my road missing my drive and slamming my mini into my fathers car. the paint then cracked where the arch flexed. but along as you avoid not flexing them i dont see why you should have a problem.

exactly :) but remember not to rub all the way back to the fibreglass, just enough to get rid of shine :D

Hi
I would have thought, that if they are abs plastic, you will need a plastic primer for them. This is always used on motorcycle plastic panels to stop any sort of reaction and helps the paint primer stick properly. Again, if you check at Halfords, they keep it in stock. Its also used for resprays on plastic bumpers.
ABS is a completely different ballgame to glass fibre.
Ask at your local piant shop. They can only tell you to sod off, but normally they give the info no probs

yea, for plastics use a plastic primer, its allows the plactic to "flex" with out cracking the paint.

i always rub everything down with 600 wet and dry first and then check for and any inperfections, you can rub down with a more coarse paper but your then only going to have to smooth the whole thing off again.

then i use panel wipe and a scoth to key it up, making sure i get under all the edges. i also wipe it off with a cloth and panel wipe to get rid of any residue.

for plastic use plastic primer, bare metal use etch primer.

then paint on your base primer, give it a few coats.

GENTLY rub it down with 600 being carefully not to take it back down to plastic, be especially carefully on the edges. you just aiming for a nice consistant smoothness.

wipe and degrease.

few coats of your base colour.

few coats of clear. at this point depending on your skill you can either just G3 then polish or 1500 wet and dry, G3 then polish

i highly recomend you steer clear of spray laqure as it never shines like it will from a gun.

luke.
