I'm looking at fitting a CB Radio to my mini, has anyone fitted this?

http://www.thunderpo...ack-starter.htm

Any advice/help as to a good starting kit would be great!

AND - how do you pass the cable from the antenna into the car?

Cheers :)

And could I fit the antenna in place of the original wing-mounted aerial?

Looks a good radio, you can fit it in the aerial hole and lots of people do but be aware of how much the aerial moves around that close to the windscreen! It's pretty fiddly too!

Thats the set-up i bought, works really well.
I use the gutter mount, i dont know if you could find a wing mount type aerial, but i'd imagine if you could it'd have to be pretty long to get a decent reception..
And would the hole in the wing be man enough to hold it ?

Cheers guys! Looks like that's the one i'll get then :)

Toyboy, with the gutter mount how does the antenna cable enter the car? All i can think of is through the rear side window?

just toying with ideas. if you could somehow have one attached to the rear bumper - Then you could run the cable under the car and in through one of many rust holes :D - jokes!.

Do you have to take these ariels down all the time - i imagine chavs would allways be snapping them.

And what makes a CB antenna different to a regular one?

Sorry for the Hi-Jack but im interested.

The CB aerials just screw in so you can take them off easily
I mounted mine by drilling a hole in the rear quarter about an inch away from the boot, it looks nice an tidy there and is easy to fit!

I'm not too confident drilling a hole in a panel,, how did you attach it after drilling the hole?

And do you know if it would fit in the hole already in the front wing?

Thanks for any help - much appreciated!

Ok, first of all fixing the aerial to the original mounting hole is ok as long as the aerial isn't too long. A long 'whip' aerial will move quite a bit and start to bend the top of the wing were the hole is, unless you strengthen the area around the hole.

A shortish aerial like this, http://www.4x4cb.com....cfm?itemID=707 would be ok, but this effects the performance and range of the CB.

So in reality you need to look for an aerial that is at least 3 foot long and fixes in one of the following ways:- Mag mount, fixed mount or gutter mount.

Mag mounts are just large magnetic bases that stick to the metal of your car and can take a whip aerial of upto 6 foot. The mag mounts can be easily removed from the car and locked in the car for security. They are normally best placed on the roof of the car in the centre.

Something like this http://www.4x4cb.com...cfm?itemID=1737 will do the trick.

A fixed aerial has a base like this http://www.4x4cb.com...cfm?itemID=1967 and means the aerial is always attached to the car.

Or how about something like this http://www.4x4cb.com...cfm?itemID=1086 which clips to the lip of the boot lid.

Or a gutter mount http://www.4x4cb.com...cfm?itemID=1339 againa fixed permanently.

HOWEVER - If you were to fit a fixed mount you could fit this http://www.4x4cb.com...41&Category=513 between the mount and the aerial, which gives you the chance to unclip the aerial and leave it in the car\house\garage for security.

This is a nice little package http://www.4x4cb.com...20&Category=653 .

For the leads, well with the fixed mounts the lead goes through the body work and into the car.

For all the other mounts you'll have to drape the lead into the car through a window or door.

Mine is tucked in between the door and the door frame and I've not had any problems with leaks.

Oh and by the way I'm not affiliated in any way whatsoever with the above company. Its just that I have used them myself and can recommend their service.

You can buy a fixed aerial mount which has rubbers either side, you would use the same type of mount for the front aerial hole. I think the existing aerial hole might be a bit big but I'm not sure, if you aren't in any rush then have a look at other cars at Bingley and how they have mounted theirs.

Mine comes in through the top of the rear door, being an estate.
The wife has one and that comes through the rear side window, had no problem with leaks........ yet !
