You can see both sides of the area on a van, if it's the right shape, if the only problem is the overlap.. and you are wanting to but weld it in, why not using a 1mm cutting disk cut right through the middle of the weld between the two panels so they can be properly aligned? You can see behind it so should be able to see any issues behind it, it shouldn't be hiding anything.

Hi sorry TMFers, not been able to get back on the car since posting this. Im due to be back over the weekend so will investigate and update once I have some news.
Cheers CLM I couldn't remember if you can see the other side or not. If so I will use your methord, cut from the inside where the patch meets the bodywork then butt weld and dress from the outside.

Hmm, do most of the cut from the outside after looking at the inside to judge the cut. it's only single skin so no need to cram yourself into a hole when you can use the whole outside :)

Well I had a look over the weekend and there is a overlap of about half an inch. Although I decided not to attack it with the angle grinder in the end, mainly for the fact that I only had 4mm grinding discs.
Now I know I'm probably going back on what I said. But I'm thinking maybe just to leave it as it is and weld inbetween the spot welds, grind it down smoother and doing a neater job of blending the panels together with less filler?
Or can someone with more experience tell me again that I'm talking rubbish and should just cut it and re do it........

no nothing I can find brams.
I could see behind the top of the panel and then I manage to get a torch and my finger into the corner section up under the valence and there doesnt feel like theres rust there.
