My great grandad used to own a Mk 2 Ford Escort. When he died, it passed to my mum who later either scrapped or sold it (I was younger and not into cars at the time, I really wish she hadn't now!).

I spoke to my Grandad, who doesn't forget anything and he told me the VRN was WKM650S. The DVLA tax disc check originally produced no results, as I was entering Ford as the make.

I checked on vehiclecheck.com, which only requires a plate and it came back as a Leyland Cars 1800HL Auto, in Green. I then checked DVLA again, using Leyland Cars as the make and it produced the following:

Date of Liability 13 06 1991
Date of First Registration 01 02 1978
Year of Manufacture 1978
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1798cc
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type PETROL
Export Marker N
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour GREEN
Vehicle Type Approval Not Available

Now if the Escort was scrapped, the VRN is then available to other people for a car from the same period, correct? Well if the date of liability is in 1991, how is this possible given that my great grandad died in approximately 97 I think it was, and I know the car was on the road up until when he died?

Any help much appreciated. If the Escort hasn't been scrapped I would very much like to find it and see if there is any chance of buying it back.

I think date of liability is the date when the last tax disc expired....also if the car had been scrapped no details would appear. It should tell you if it is SORN'd usually on the same page..

That's what I thought. So how can the date of liability for the Princess be 1991 when that reg was on a Ford Escort, and it was taxed at that time? Could the DVLA have put the VRNs the wrong way round? So for example, if the actual reg of the Princess was VRM650S and the actual reg of the Escort is WKM650S but on the system as the Escort being VRM650S and the Princess as WKM650S? Note - I have checked a few plates similar to WKM650S, but not VKM, thats just an example.
