Ok so I have got to the flywheel today and it is loose. with engine still i can turn the clutch flywheel assembly about quarter of a turn in each direction? I think this isn't going to be a case of tightening up but I'm not sure any ideas ?

the flywheel to crank key is most likely damaged, they are about £9 new. (i have provided pics of the verto and non verto crank keys as they are different.
make sure that the end of the crank hasnt been damaged.
here is a pic of what you need.

Are yes I didn't think about that I'm going to remove the flywheel later hoping the crank is ok

at least the flywheel will come off easily so that will be a bonus.......

Be sure to lap the flywheel to the crankshaft taper if it has been loose. The fit of the taper actually carries all the dynamic load once it is correctly torqued up.

If the flywheel has come loose in service - there is something seriously wrong.... It won't just be a case of a new keywasher - in reality that washer does nothing except for initial installation - the taper fit carries all the power. If it is loose - the tapers will be ruined. Are you sure that's the problem - and not a broken crank?

Yes with the clutch in it starts up fine I think the clutch is pushing the flywheel into place I think it's going to be an engine out job I reckon the crank will be dead I will have a good look in the week
