1988 Mini City E Automatic.

The old fan belt was knackered, took it to a local auto-dealer and got a 10x838 fan belt which looked the same when they were stretched next to each other. Got all the way back home and couldn't fit it for love nor money, tried it with the alternator off, then putting the alternator inside the belt and fitting but couldn't get the holes to line up by miles - tried loads and in the end gave up and fitted the old one for now.

I'll nip back as it's near work today, I think the next size up is 850 - is that too big though?

Cheers,
Dan

I work in motor factors, as a rule of thumb we say that you should get away with something 5mm bigger than what is in the listing for the car. Dont know if the same goes for this, hope it helps anyway.

According to my listing it should be a 10A840

I've just fit a 825mm fan belt in mine (1991 mini city) and it was a struggle but I got there in the end. What I did was loosen the top two bolts of the alternator, loosened the bottom bolt on the alternator, then loosened the adjusting bracket on the block so the whole thing moved. then with a bit of elbow grease I finally got him on. Took me about 15 minutes to get it all set up right.

Might have another go, I'm loosening the two upper alternator bolts and the alternator bolt that's on the big adjuster thing attached to the alternator (shaped like a banana).

Anything else I can do? Also what do I need to remove from the car for a fan belt change? I was doing it with the rad out, but hoping I don't have to do that again.

The 838 really seemed too small - don't think an 840 would be any better, I'll have another go at some point, but I really think it needs about 845.

Every time I change the fan belt I always remove the alternator. I then slacken of the adjuster bracket (Banana Bracket) Get the belt on the alternator spindle, then attach two top alternator mounts (loosely done up) then the bottom alternator mount (loose) leaving the adjuster still loose. Then i pull back as hard as i can on the alternator to make the belt tight, then do up the adjustor bolt at the same time. Then tighten up all the bolts and bobs you uncle.

As i said i used a 825mm so you shouldn't need bigger than what you have.

825 is fine with the small early water pump pulley. 850 should be fine with the large pulley.

Maybe I have the large pulley, I'll go get an 850 tomorrow. Cheers!
