hi i have recently bought a 1962 austin mini cooper 997, it has been kept in a garage a needs restoring.i have spent the last couple of days looking over it to see what needs doing and what this mini cooper is all about,last night i was writing down some of the relivant engine numbers ie engine number 9f-sah - and noticed that the cylinder head i believe is not of a 997 it is a 1071 cooper s head 12a 185 is this true, and why ?? .. also the registation has two numbers and three letters is this common and what was the reason?? kind regards mark

As I said on your rebuild thread, 12 A 185 was a number appointed to two cylinder heads, 1 a 997 head, the other a Cooper S head. Both heads are completely different. I strongly suspect that your head is correct to the car.

Yes on older cars - registration sequences were 1 > 999 on three letter plates.
