Ok so I have a 1971 850cc mini which (if it was still a 850cc) would be around £200 to 300 to insure with my age and details etc.
A STANDARD 1275 mini is around £400 max for me (I tried it for futile arguing purposes)
However because I have a brand new 1275cc engine in it most insurance companies either don't like it, won't insure it or are wanting £800+
I know its no good saying how unfair and mental this is to them over the phone but is there not somewhere that understands that ALOT of minis have changes like this? And price insurance accordingly?
Thanks

First off have you updated the V5 yet? Im in the process of doing it and the DVLA want written proof that the engine is in there BEFORE they will change the cc on the V5. Im getting my local mechanic to do mine for free.
Because your car is now modified you will have to go to specialist insurance companys - Adrian Flux ect.
Most "Normal" insurance companys dont understand mods or allow them.
I have a Golf with a remap some companys said what is a remap?

Haha, 'what is a remap?' brilliant.
I must say I have had a good laugh over those who fussed over what car the engine came from- and the laurel and hardy confusion that ensues when I say "another mini".
Ok will get V5 set up and changed and try Adrian Flux again-
Last time I rang them I found that they can't hold onto quotes (for you to get drunk enough to agree to them) and you have to agree there and then because he said "the price fluctuates daily and could be much more expensive tomorrow" to which I said, "or cheaper huh?"- he had to agree with me.
Sigh
Thanks for all your help everyone.

Dont forget to check all the comparison websites, i remember searching back along, and one company on one of the websites gave a quote of about half of the other quotes and was similar in price to an unmodified car. So even if you have checked one, check some others just in case!

the only problem with comparison websites is no agreed value insurance
you crash and your 20 year old mini is worth scrap value, if you want anymore it will be a long battle

Yea will definitely need to get an agreed value.
Also with the comparison sites its not often you get the choice to say this type of engine modification-
The choices you get are - non standard engine replacement, standard engine replacement or bored out.
Never sure which one my case would be- its not "bored out" (bit naughty to say it is), maybe non standard because its not "originally" for this car but then could be standard replacement because some Minis do have 1275cc engines?
Anyone know what the right thing to say would be?
Thanks

and frank pickles, i have insured my 1.8 mini through him for less than 1/3 with what was with sureterm when they did it, also sureterm will insure a change to a 1275 just not anything bigger as thats counted as not "normal".
