Hi, This is my first time so here is my question.

I own a 1990 mini whith 998 engine, recently the head has gone on the mini engine and it was time for a bigger engine. Ive just brought a 1275 sprite engine and gear box with carb and manifold of my uncle is this engine as good as a metro engine ? or not and I just asking if you have to change the diff ratio and would would i gain much if i put some upgrades on engine the while it is out. Thank you nick

If you don't end up fitting it, I'm after a 1275 to replace my automatic 998! ;)

Take it you mean a 1275 Mini Sprite engine, not a 1275 Austin-Healey Sprite engine!

in a word.........no........and the carbs wont fit onto the mini either without them hitting the bulkhead because the sprite inlet manifold has a different angle to a mini one.

A Mini gearbox goes under the engine, whilst an A-H Sprite one goes on the end of the engine.

The end of the block is very different on the in-line engines. The rear main bearing is another issue. You don't have a 'backplate', the in-line has a clutch on the crankshaft, which itself is different at the end, followed by a bell-housing then a gearbox. The Mini (and 1100, Metro, 1300, etc) has a transfer gear case to carry the primary gear which takes the drive down 90 degrees via a transfer gear to the gearbox input gear and shaft.

Anything can be done with enough money and effort. Converting auto engines for use with manual gearboxes and converting inline engines for transverse mounting are topics that come up regularly. As I said, with enough money and effort these things are possible. However, apart from taking on a challenge... why bother? In the end it will cost you less and be easier to simply find the correct Mini engine to transplant into your car.
