i would really recommend it after all the mk1 wand boxes are quite old so would require a rebuild part ,labour then will it cope with the stresses of a turbo or bored out engine i would probably go for a reconditioned a series box :gimme: hope this helps.
also the a series box parts are easier to get when things go wrong

I believe you can fit a magic wand shift mechanism to a 4 synchro box so you should be OK with high power. My Dad used to hill climb with a similar set-up.

do I need to upgrade the inards of the gear box to cope with the extra stress?

The later type magic wand gear change as shown above (by Badchilli) can be fitted to any 4-syncro box 850/998/1275 (pre-rod change) so no reason why it won't be strong enough for a 1275/1380 engine with suitable gears. The only drawback will be the lack of a remote or rod gear change mounting to stabilise the engine rocking under hard acceleration, etc..............but you could try fitting other aftermarket engine stabilisors to compensate. The late type magic wand gearbox and parts or to convert are however quite rare to find these days as only fitted to some early Mk2, early Mk3 Mini's and early vans/pickups. (1967-74 approx)

"While the direct and remote change systems are very obviously totally different, they share the same gear selector mechanism inside the gearbox. From late 1968 when the gearbox went over from 3 to 4 synchromesh, they shared the same differential housing too - prior to that, the direct gearchange had its own unique diff housing with a small gearchange tower on it."

Diagrams here:
http://www.somerford... ... age&id=151

The later type magic wand gearlever 22A1382 is also different to pre-68, slot in ball is at top or side depending which.
