Sounds like your solenoid is sticking. Or maybe a problem with your ignition barrel.
You can test by removing the large lead and?with others on the the same tag from the solenoid. Disconnect battery first, then join them together with a bolt insulate the end to avoid any nasty sparks before reconnecting battery. Now have someone turn the ignition key to start and release it. You should hear the solenoid engage and then release. If it doesn't release check that there is no power at the small tag with red and white wire on it. If no power there the solenoid is sticking, if there's power the solenoid is being held in probably by a fault with your ignition barrel not springing back correctly.

Could be the starter switch -or the relay - or the solenoid. Did this happen suddenly? Was anything done to the car immediately before?

The solenoid is the smaller of the two cylinders of the starter motor.
It pushes the shaft out to engage the gears of the starter motor with the flywheel.

Where the solenoid is depends on how old or what type of starter motor is fitted.

Upto about 1984 the starter had the seperate solenoid fitted to the wing or near to.

After the solenoid is mounted on the starter,

The later starter mounted type also uses a seperate relay often found near the brake servo.
