Not really sure what to look for, everyone has different advice but I need some help. I need reliability more than anything, but only have a budget of around £2000 for the car at the moment. Is it best to buy from a mini dealer, or online? Or other? need some help! Also which model is best to look for, i'm 17 so am worried about insurance so as cheap insurance as possible

I've just picked up mine from eBay for £991. It's a 1994 Mayfair and I was lucky - the reserve price wasn't met but as the highest bidder, mine was accepted. I'd bid on previous cars on eBay but was always sniped at the last minute and none of them were particularly close to me - one I came close to winning was in Scarborough which is about 200 miles north of me. The other thing to bear in mind about eBay is that, certainly with a private sale, as opposed to trade, you pay your money and take your chance but most people should allow you to go and inspect the car. With a trade seller, you generally have some kind of come back.
I know what it's like trying to find insurance at 17 - a friend's son is about that age and I was staggered at the prices that some companies wanted to charge. My advice would be to go for a 1litre engine with as few modifications to the car as possible - if only because you get to put your stamp on it. I don't know what your budget is like post-purchase but, for me at least, good body work wins out over mechanicals. That said, the more history the better but from what I've seen when I was looking, people are proud of their Minis and tend to keep that kind of thing - it also helps prop up the value.
I found a few, and in your budget, by googling rover mini for sale or having a look at Autotrader but bear in mind, you may have to travel and don't forget prices vary wildly. Remember these cars are becoming more and more desirable and so get snapped up quickly but if you're anything like me, you'll know when you've found the right car.
Don't forget, eBay isn't necessarily the way to go but have a look at these as examples:

Hope that helps and good luck in your search

the second link is a nice little motor, thanks! I am hoping to spend the original £2000 on getting something as reliable as possible, don't care what it looks like because I would rather make it look how I want anyway! then i have around £200 a month average after that , though some will go on petrol, and the rest to keep it running and make any modifications. I know there is a few different websites on what to look for when first buying, but is there anywhere that sells at a reasonable price but from some sort of dealer? or do you know of anyone who is selling? I would preferably like to view before buying and don't want to risk ebay as I have been saving for a long time and want to spend on something solid. Dilemna as to what to do!
