Gear Selection Problems

The Car:
1982 HL with mid 80's standard metro 1275 engine (rod change)
The problem:
the last few months the car has been hard to change down from 3rd to 2nd. sometimes its worst than others and sometimes it feels fine, but more often than not it has taken a fair amount of force to push the gear lever from right to left. Also, i no longer had to lift the gear lever to find reverse, pulling it to the far right it would just slightly click, then i could pull it back towards myself to find reverse gear.
i just took the gear lever out and it looked a little dry so chucked a load of grease around it and put it back in. now i can no longer select 3rd or 4th or reverse! pulling the gear lever to the right just twists the whole assembly, but the lever doesnt actually move in relation to it.
Any ideas will be much appreciated!
Cheers,
Matt

I'll check tomorrow, but there's definitely a ball at the bottom of the lever (http://imageshack.us.../gearlever.gif/ see highlighted bit in pic) - i assume this is what you mean?
Cheers

Couple things to check before thinking of the worst case.
The shifter is supported by a rod that reaches forward to the dif housing, and two rubber "bobbins" just below your shift lever.
Get it up in the air and check that these rubber bobbins havn;t deteriorated away. Also check at the diff end to see that the bolt is in place.

i've checked all that was suggested and it all seems fine. the two rubber 'bobbins' that holds the the shifter to the floor are fine, as are all the bolts holding them in place. the bolt is also tight on the dif end of the stabalizing arm, though there is a fair bit of side to side movement, but i assume that is normal?
any further suggestions?
cheers.

There is a bushing in there and also a rubber....perhaps this bushing is missing, allowing some movement. One wouldn't think this would cause your selection problem though.

remove the gear lever again and check there is a nylon ball attached to the bottom of it.
Hi Guessworks - I have the downshift problem from 3rd to 2nd gear on my A+ 1994 Spi. Is mine a different problem , i.e. a typical A+ 'box problem?

Hi, my mate has this exact problem, i spoke to him last night and he said that he was gonna try and get to the bottom of it today, will let you know how he gets on. However, he is a bit retarded so dont get your hopes up.

Not really "normal" I don't think.

The part is there - however i think the outer part of it (rubber and all) has worn/perished away, just leaving the inner 'pipe' to which the 'u' shaped fixing on the end if the stabilizer bar slides over left/right

i removed the roll pins from the coupler yesterday, the gear lever then moved freely, so i guess it has to be something on the gearbox end of things. i have a spare engine in the garage so i'm going to feel the clockwise/counter clockwise movement on the rod while its in neutral and compare it with the one in the car. i guess if it moves freely on the garage engine, but not on the engine in my car then it must be a problem with the gearbox? in which case, i think my summer engine swap is going to get moved up the calendar! :/
