I've recently bought a 12" sub for my boot, and i already have 6x9s on the parcel shelf. however I was on a thread the other day and I read someone mentioning that a sub in the boot would not be a good idea with speakers on the parcel shelf? Maybe I'm talking rubbish but if I'm not please tell me what to do and why it's a bad idea? Cheers :)

Too put it simply, the sub moves a lot of air, which pounds against the parcel shelf speakers...

Also, if you have 6x9s in the parcel shelf, how's the bass entering the cabin?

Oh Damn how obvious :/ I haven't installed it yet. Does that mean you can't have a sub in the boot unless you remove the parcel shelf??

Not at all, but if you removed those 6x9s, you'd have a decent port for enough air/bass/noise to get through to the cabin ;)

Get some speakers up front

Youve got a couple of options, you could move the speakers of the p shelf and just cover the holes over with grill cloth or just something to make it look nice but allow air to move thru.

Or you could make little pods to fit behind the 6x9s to seal them off from the damaging sound pressure from the sub. But then You would obviously have to make a little port into the cabin for the air to move through.

I had a similar problem and the 6x9s sounded terrible and were restricting the sub and it just made the boot make a farting sound everytime the bass dropped in, i simply removed the 6x9s but kept the 6x9 grills in place to tidy it up and it sounded a million times better, get some 4x6's or speakers of your choice under the dash and fit the 6x9s under the rear seats and it will sound a million times better :)

My subs :) The box fitted perfectly in a lined boot! It was a custom box by the way ;)

Or don't use any speakers at all behind you firing in to your arse, as it sounds pants and is completely wrong. :D

Also what are 4x6's? Are they like little 6x9's... Why would anyone want them??

A good quality set of components up front, and your sub in the boot will be miles ahead of 6x9s in the shelf.
Best way to look at it is put the quality sound where you sit (up front) and rely on the less directional sound from the sub fill in the lows.
