Hi all
I am thoroughly sick of my points-based ignition being crap in the cold and damp and misfiring.
The above sets are available on EBay as a complete distributor for about £50- which do people recommend? Or the kits that sit in the distributor that cost about £30?

The car is a standard 1983 A+ 998 City E.
PS done a search for old posts and read them, most are very old indeed!
Thanks for replies!
Andrew

Google the Britpart kit. Much cheaper than all the other kits and it's just as good as any of them. Ran the kit in my dizzy with no issues!

Here you go: http://www.britpart....cessoryRef=1700

There's a kit available on Minispares for an electronic dizzy:

Tis dear, but apparently very good. There's also the option of going for Megajolt or similar, which is going to cost around the same price, but that's programmable and has a a fair bit of wiring involved.

OMG that's "dear"! £288 compared to £30 odd for the other ones haha! I take it that must be really good then!

Does anyone have one of those ones (Accuspark, ultraspark) off EBay that sits inside the dizzy fitted to their car? What are they like to fit and use?

I had a Lumenition kit years ago, that was good, but I ditched the dizzy on my A-series after "the winter of 2007" where it was pot luck as to whether I'd be able to drive to work.

The accuspark kits look to have had a couple of duff reviews:

Doesn't mean they're no good, just no good for those people, on that occasion.

just a quick question, how much would megajolt cost brand new? is there anywhere off the shelf you can purchase it from to? i'm interested in running it on my 998, with future plans of going turbo! also, how easy is it to make your own maps?

thanks giacomo

It's all pretty easy, have a look in the MJ FAQ in the tech. bits. I wrote it ages ago, but it's still (mostly) relevant.

I used a britpart kit, on ballasted ignition to no ill effect, they're about £15 iirc, just go to a land rover parts place and they should stock them. May need a minor amount of fettling to fit, mine needed a tiny bit of plastic scraping out the back so it fit over the rotor.

I have an Accuspark kit on the Viva, as do many Viva owners. They've sent a few faulty units out, but their customer service is very good and they send another out immediately. I've found mine to be good and made a considerable difference, a much steadier idle.

Yeah, my Britpart kit cost me a around £15 too. Just do a search for your local britpart distributor and give them a bell to order you one in...... they might even already have it on the shelf?

The britpart is normally an off the shelf part, but its exactly the same thing as your £50/60 lumenition kit, and i'd rather spend £15 for the same thing! Just many people don't know about it.

Britpart it is then probably! Now the big question... Will it fit my 1983 998cc A+ with a Lucas 59d4 dizzy- does this have ballasted or non ballasted coil?!?

It will fit your dizzy but you may have to remove the pivot pin for the sliding points from the baseplate. Your car is on the changeover point for ballasted ignition, it might have it or might not. What colour is the supply cabling to the coil? If it's plain white, it's 12v, if there are two cables (one thick pink/white and one thin white/yellow) it's ballasted. You can still use the ballasted coil but the Britpart module MUST be powered with 12v so don't take its power from the coil if your car is ballasted. Make it a new 12v ignition switched supply, just to supply the module itself with power. The Britpart module is designed for Land Rovers and they never used ballasted ignition.
