Hallo again

I'm a noob here and posted a short hello in the intro section

my bog standard mayfair 1.3i from 2000 has been drinking about a litre of oil a month

and I haven't been driving hard

did a compression check and they give out 190 psi per cylinder so looks ok there

did the valves but the haynes manual i have said around 0.04 - 0.08mm on ins and exs

so I set all the valves at 0.06mm and car is running ok

BUT I would like to get the exact VALVE spec for the 2000 1.3 mayfair injection
if someone can give it to me and in mm if you please

anyway a big hello to you all from Hiroshima japan

Hi,

Your quote of the Hayne smanual of 0.04-0.08 is WAY too small - you must have mis-read / mis-typed it:

The Haynes manual quotes
Valve clearances
Inlet and exhaust (engine cold):
All engine types except 12A . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.30 mm
12A engines . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.33 to 0.38 mm

The Rover workshop manual from November 1998 states 0.30mm.

Or if you must be metric, 0.3mm inlets and 0.4mm exhausts. But it won't have any effect on oil consumption.... The compressions you quote are extraordinarily high for a road engine ! How did you take the readings?

How does one know what the inlet and what the exhaust valve is? I need to set the gap, and was going to follow the Haynes book and set them all the same, however if it makes a difference I'll go with 0.3 and 0.4, but how to tell?

The valve sequence is:
1 ex,
2 & 3 in,
4 & 5 ex,
6 & 7 in,
8 ex.

Oops,

seems like I forgot about this post but I misstyped anyways

as others said the valve clearance in general is 0.30mm for those of us who prefer metric, a little loose on the ex valves is supposed to be better (as someone else said 0.40mm ex)

and better late than never, I got the compression readings using a gunson compression tester and  just turning over each cylinder a couple of times ( I forget now but you have to make sure that something is disconected so as not to do any electrical damage, I think I disconected the distributor but it was  a while ago now so.....

To check compressions remove the plugs, and disconnect the ignition lead from distributor to coil.

Plug the compression tester into cylinder no.1, open the throttle fully and crank the engine for 5 seconds. Take the reading.

Repeat for the other 3 cylinders.

Do this when the engine is still warm.
