the questions is;

how thick should the walling be?
Have these wheels ever been tested for roadworthiness?
if you hit a curb at 50mph should the wheel split in two?

I think if you hit a kerb at 50mph it's likely to cause all sorts of damage and not just to the wheel rim. If it was a small ding against a kerb at parking speed causing that then I'd be worried, but hitting a kerb at 50mph is a whole different ball game. I'm not surprised it did that. Not an everyday occurence!

Wheels are not part of a crash test situation. They will be load tested to how they should be used, but hitting a kurb at 50mph i don't think you'll be seeing any wheel survive.

I was not driving, I just repaired the damage, He had no lock up he just ventured off the road over the kurb, may well have been texting!
I think a dent in the rim would be exspected, but it splitting in two is to much I have never seen a wheel like this in the 25 years of motoring. the other damage included bending the steering arm and the subframe.
its all been replaced now. the wheels i have recalled becouse I think they are of a sub standard. after all its my arse that gets sued if they are, becouse i sold them

50mph? Any rim would shatter/break at that speed. Surprised if thats all that broke.

If he bent the steering arm and subframe he didnt just glide off the road. Someone isn't quite telling the full truth.

Sued for what? His shoddy driving?

Nothing to worry about I don't think. If the impact was enough to bent the steering arms and subframe that i'd expect that to happen to a wheel

For what it's worth, I have seen lots alloy wheels split and sheer radially, most often in motor sport accidents, and that sheer doesn't necessarily look to me indicative of any fault with the wheel.

If it helps, it looks as though the inner land of the wheel was expected to support the whole weight and force of the Mini pulling inwards against the square edge of the curb - guesswork, of course I wasn't there. That's a lot of force acting in a very unusual direction.

I admire your prudence though, it has to be a difficult decision to make. Have you any plans for what next? Crack test or x-ray one of the other rims to see if there is any inherent manufacturing fault?

by the way I didn't know you were a member here. When your photo-forum brother heard that I'd acquired a Mini, he said I should look up Rosslin Racing! :D

Much the same happened to my wheel, as i managed to hit a turnip sized rock, which was lying on the road.

Anything that's cast can break like this if it gets hit hard enough, and as said above I wouldn't be so sure your customer is being totally honest. I wouldn't be worried myself.

Yeah looking at the wheel again, how would hitting a curb crack the inside face of the wheel? With my wheel the rock came from under the car and hit the inside of the wheel.

I do admire your concern for the integrity of the wheel. Not many shop would think twice about it.

Have you contact the manufacturer? I'd let them know you are concerned about the product and would like to know what measures were taken to ensure its quality and strength.

I would also tell them that you will not carry their product unless you can be assured to your satisfaction that it is worthy of your customers.

If they want your business they will give you an answer.

I did speak to the seller/importer/person who has the wheels made last weekend, he did not seem to think its a problem that they split. I did ask if the wheels had been tested in any form or manner the answer was not yes they have and not no they have not.
Here in this country speeding is a crime you can go to prison for it and or be fined acording to your income! so when it says 50 KmH you drive at that speed I have looked at the curb he drove over and he is well with in the 50 KmH limit and it was a 5 oclock at night so traffic would also slow you down.
I shall never sell this brand again although the customer choose them. I would like to see minilights doing that.
