basicly fittied tims mechanical gauge, with home made inline hose adaptor...

running temp 70-75*c....

engine off, rises to 85*c max then works its way back down to ool....

sound reasonable?

thanks.

No, too cold, if the gauge is accurate. It will not cause immediate damage, unlike being much too hot, but it does reduce engine efficiency, so fuel consumption will be worse, and in the long term it increases wear and internal engine corrosion because the oil will not reach its ideal temperature, any water in the oil due to condensation will not evaporate and be expelled, and acidic combustion products may also accumulate in the oil. If you can't fix the temperature fairly soon, change the oil nore often than usual, as a short term way of avoiding needless engine wear. But a new thermostat should be all it needs.

85 to 95 degrees, up to almost 100 in the short term, would be more reasonable, and will give more warmth from the heater in cold weather, which might be important right now!

depends where the temperature is being measured. If you are measuring coolant in the bottom hose, you are not reading the controlled (thermostat) operating temperature, but rather the cooler bottom hose temperature.

also, if you are measuring the temperature in the top hose, again you will find that you will not read an accurate controlled temperature, more so in this cold weather since the thermostat will barely be open.

Personally i would fit the temperature sensing element into the original temp sender hole, since the Tim mechanical gauge is the same fitting, you do not need to use the adapter, but if the element won't go all the way in, you might have to.

Good point! I was assuming it was measured in the head. Elsewhere can be seriously misleading.

It's fine if you have a 74 degree stat. But in winter an 88 degree stat makes more sense....

sprocket i dont have a hole in my block :/ spi 1994

bmcecosse i have fitted the temp sender inline with the hose that comes from the top of the thermostat housing to the inlet manifold/heater matrix if this helps :) dont understand the thermostat bit tho :/

thanks

Fair enough.

Two questions

Is the injection system still being used?
If it is, where does the standard temp gauge needle sit when the engine is fully warm?

If the injection system is still being used, and the standard temp gauge never reaches the mid way, you have other probems. less than 85c on an injection engine is bad. you have to be sure your new gauge is actually reading the engine temperature. There are many reasons that it won't. Thermostat sitting in the head and not the sandwich plate is a common one.
