i have just brought a 12G940 cylinder head and its the cooper S spec but i was wondering if anyone could tell me if it is actually off a cooper S or if it is off a 1300GT. It has the 12G 1805 stamped near the theromstat housing and bellow this there is a capital R stamped into the head and i just wonder if anyone had any idea
cheers

That should be a big valve MK3 Cooper S/1275GT head. It would also have been used on MG1300s and possibly MG Midgets.

Does it have holes for 11 studs and 1 bolt, or just 9 stud holes?
Although not definitive 'S' if it does have those 11 holes, if it only has 9 holes it is definately not an 'S' head.

The head is an 11 stud head and is definately off a 1300GT or MK3 cooper S i was just wondering if the capital R stamped on it showed that it was a Cooper S head?

I'm pretty sure that if there is a stamping of L,S or R on the head near the thermostat its off an S, if there is just the 12G1805 then its off an innocenti or the MG1300.

dunno what the stamping is, and there is no other difference between the heads so it would only mater if you were building a concours S.

The letter, if there, has no relevance to it being an S head or not.

My 12G1805 has an A stamped on it, but I don't know what that means.

i have been reading around and other forums have suggested that these letters are quality stamps from the factory, unsure if they were on any 12G1805 heads or just cooper S heads but would make sense on the coopers as they were the performance engines rather than standard production
