I am in the middle of changing the door furniture from the black plastic stuff to the alloy stuff.

I was just wondering how people have fitted the lock surround? Mine have been supplied with tiny screws and some tiny white plug things.... but when attempting to screw them to the door, the plugs aren't big enough to keep them attached and just fall out of the hole again.

I tried using some rawl plugs that are bigger than the tiny things supplied and bigger screws, but the plugs just turned in the hole again.

Has anyone got better suggestions (don't say just put the black ones back on).

Cheers!

Chris

I fitted a set of these yesterday and had the same problem. The black ones were just glued on my mini so I did the same and put a small amount (so they can be removed) of glue on them. Seems to have done the trick.

Cheers!!

OK, but haven't you now got exposed holes on show on the outside of the surrounds?? I did think about putting some double-sided tape on them, but didn't want the holes with no screws in.

I put a little glue on the underside of the head of the screw so that holds the screw in place. If I ever need to remove it a turn with the screwdriver and the srews should drop out.

Hmmmmm.... that could be a good fix!! Cheers for the suggestion.

I was gonna try and find some self tappers that would fit in the hole and not bother with the plugs.

Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I tried that too with the self tappers but couldn't find any with a small enough head so that they looked good once fitted. I'll try to post a photo later, I'm at work atm.

I think a rivnut is the best solution. I glued mine in but could never really get the screws tight before they span again

I did think about borrowing my brothers rivet gun, but wasn't sure the lock surround would be strong enough to take them! Does anyone else think that the surrounds look un-finished?? Like they should have something inserted in to the space inside the lip once you have attached them to the door.

Also.... the window winder seems a lot stiffer than the original one... is there any way to sort this out??

No not a rivet, a rivnut. With a riv nut you'd fix it to the holes instead of the little plastic bits and then the screws would go into them

I fitted mine recently, held the white plastic bit with some pliers, the plate over so the hole is lined up and then screwed each screw in like that. Once you've done both sides fairly tight you should have everything put together, then the fitting just pushes in the holes on the door very snuggly and can easily be taken out if needed...and no messy glue ;D

I did think it was a stupid way to design them though...looks great though!
