Im new to Mini's and purchased a 1972 mini1000. It wasnt running when I purchased it but have sorted out many wiring issues and now she's a driver. The old plugs and exhaust show that it has been running rich for a long time. Now that she runs it is deffinatly rich. I have not pulled the carb to investigate what needle is in it yet but when at idle the mixture screw on the side of the bowl has no affect on the rpm. It is a 998cc with (from what I can tell) stock internals and a HIF 38 carb. What would be the proper needle or a good starting point and any ideas of why the mixture adjuster is'nt having any affect?

Same problem with my hif38 carb, i dont know what needle i should need but i did have a bent needle and had to straighten out that helped alot but still my idle screw or rpm doesnt work.. think the carb is in need of a refurb in both our cases!

I think HIF38's were only fitted to 1991/2 Mini Sprites, so you have a non standard carb. I would ring Burlen Fuel systems (http://www.burlen.co.uk/) and ask them.

Erm.... I'm fairly sure that HIF38's were fitted to a whole range of crossover models in the early nineties, right up until the Spi became standard in 1994 (i.e the Italian Job, Rio, Tahiti etc) Admitted they were all loosely based on the Sprite model though and a in any case a '72 mini certainly wouldn't have been fitted with one as standard.

A 998cc Metro had the HIF38 carb. So having the HIF38 on your Mini isn't a problem. But it does sound like it needs a rebuild. On the HIF44 carb I took of my last Mini the mixture screw made no difference. Turned out the jet was completely seized in the carb. It sounds like your carb may have a similar problem.

I am aware that this is not the stock carb for this year. I guess the best bet is to get a rebuild kit but I figured I should order a needle at the same time. Is the AAA needle a good starting point? Any sugestions or recomendations? Also what is the proper oil for the carb and the proper amount? I have heard 5 weight shock oil works well.

3 in 1 oil. And all needles are much the same profile at 'idle' so the needle is not the problem......
