Hi All,

Was just wondering what the best air filter is for the Hif44 carb. I have the origianl airbox and filter on there at the mo, but am thinking of changing to something else. So what would you go for..... how much are they to purchase and how easy are they to install??

Cheers!!

If you want too make a lot more noise and a little more power, a K&N cone filter is the way to go, however depending on the spec of your engine it will make a (sometimes very) small difference to performance. Many people argue that best drivability is retained by keeping the standard air box, installing a K&N element and drilling out the front of the air box. Stays quieter, delivers a little more torque than a cone filter which is more noticeable when driving. Plus it's much nicer when cruising on the motorways! :P

If your feeling flush, there's the MED ITG stub stack filter set up, used on an old HIF44 set up, was fantastic, and did give a genuinely noticeable performance increase. However, if your engines only mildly tuned, or this is one of your first upgrades £90 is a lot of a money for an air filter! :P

Wasn't looking to spend that sort of money really. I was hoping to get rid of the airbox to try and tidy up the bay a bit, but if it's not gonna make it that much better I'm open to keeping it, but modifying it possibly.

It's a 1275cc standard engine with Hif44 carb as far as I'm aware (only owned it a few months).

I wouldn't mind a little bit of noise, but not so much that it wakes the neighbours up LOL.

Mind you, with more air, the engine will need more fuel as well -> changing the carb needle.

So how does the Stage one kit work then, cause surely that would draw in more air, but is apparently better on fuel consumption!?!?!

More air to mix with the fuel, meaning better combustion?

I have just bought 2 K&N cones for my twin HS2's. Can't beat them.

lol, you could beat them with he ITG foam filter version, with two stub stacks! :D

I have the ITG foam filter kit from MED (comes with lovely looking machine stubstack, better that the crapps cast k&n one)

It does make a noticeable sucking noise, but did make a difference, all be it small (they have tested it on one of there 1293cc engines and it gave a 4bhp improvement, so its good but nothing super). Basically get this air filter kit and you wont ever need another, will give the best performance (for an airfilter) on any mini.

Cheers for the info guys...... I thought there would have been a little bit more of an increase in BHP than that...... just goes to show what I know about Mini engines.... but I am learning LOL

So the ITG ones are around £90?? Little bit out of my price range at the moment.... maybe I'll try the K&N, then upgrade later on.

Cheers!

ITG just isn't Mini like in my opinion.

why not. what is mini like?

If you want the best performance for what the part does (i.e. hight flow with good filtering) get the ITG with the MED stub stack, will be the best flowing vs the k&n.

but if you cant afford it then, just get a k&n filter element and put it in the stock box + a couple of holes on the front and underneath (bout 4x 1/8" dia. in front and 2 underneath), much cheaper and better flowing than a conical.

I think it looks kinda cool any way :-)

JUst needs to be a bit tidier around it

A modern looking air filter on an old car. Id rather an older style looking K&N nice and simple. You may not be able to beat that air filter but Id prefer K&N on a Mini any day :)
