My GF's Mini has starting popping from the exhaust, i checked to see if it was burning oil by putting my hand over it and my hand ended up black. I am going to check the plugs tomoz to see if their wet but i need some advice.
What kind of things should I be checking and what could the problem be?

Is it emitting blue smoke?i
Is it using oil?
It may be running rich rather than burning oil!

Oh sorry, its a 998cc Mayfair. No it's not smoking at all which I thought was rather strange... I will check the oil levels again tomoz too and for signs of fuel on the plugs if its running rich.

mine also makes the popping sound when I start it up in the morning with the choke, RAC man reckoned it may be running a little rich, does the car smell of petrol at all?

Does it "pop" from the exhaust when driving under load... or just during deceleration?
Black stuff on your had is not necessarily an indication of oil burning, particularly when the engine is cold.
