Have searched but theres so many conflicting answers so i just wanted to clear it up.

I have brought this kit http://www.mm-4x4.co...-kit-2721-p.asp

And looking to fit it tommorow. Ive got a 1982 mini mayfair 998 A+. Im pretty sure its a ballast system. can i connect the wires from the new kit to the coil or will I need a 12v feed from the fusebox?

Cheers

take a new 12V feed from the fuse box to replace the ballast one. I had to do this on my mg midget :)

You can't replace the ballast wire unless you are also changing the coil to a non ballast coil. The OP as only mentioned buying the Britpart ignition unit.

On the fuse box take the feed off the fuse with the white wire oneside , green wire the other, take the feed off the white side

Leave the coil wiring as it is, do not touch

Connect black wire from electronic ignition to coil negative, red wire connects to the new feed from the white wire side of the fuse box.

Sorry to hijack the thread, what about if you are converting from a balast coil + standard dizzy to an electric coil + dizzy, what do you do with the wiring then? I want to check I have done it right :S

That all depends on what you mean. IF you mean you want to install a factory electronic ignition dizzy with its matching electronic ignition coil, you need to install a new white wire feeding coil (+) directly from a switch terminal on the fuse box. Then there should be wires from the dizzy that connect to both coil (+) and coil (-).

The BritParts kit has been discussed several times before and I encourage you to use the search feature on this board to find some of those old threads.
In the meantime, suffice it to say that IF you have a standard ignition system (not ballast) with points, the installation is a straight-forward replacement of the points with the ignition module and connecting the module's 2 wires to the coil. Depending on which distributor you have there are some minor tweaks you may have to undertake to fit the module to the breaker plate in the dizzy. The information on the breaker plate is where the old threads I mentioned will come in handy.

The BritParts kit along with other "points replacements" like the Aldon Ignitor are just that... points replacements. Because there are no moving parts (like points) and fewer electrical parts (like condensers) they are generally less prone to failure and going out of tune. Because the rotating components do not touch the fixed components there is also some restoration of "normal" performance even when the distributor is old and worn. Some report easier starting. Some do open up the spark plug gaps for increased economy. If I had to summarize the posts on this board I would say that most installed the kit because they were tired of messing with points.

That said... if points fail you can replace them on the side of the road at night in the rain. If an electronic ignition fails you will be calling a tow truck to get home.

Well ive fitted mine, tried the red wire on the fuse box and didnt work, just smoke came from the big earth strap on the left of the engine. Then wired it straight to the coil and it works spot on so i guess i dont have a ballast system like a i thought i did. Starts and runs quicker than ever. much smoother drive. ive even brought a second kit to keep in the boot :) just in case.

just my 2cence

If you are getting smoke from the big earth wire sounds like its got a bad connection.

If you are non ballast then connecting to the fuse box white wire is the same as connecting to the coil positive, so sounds like you wired it wrong to the fuse box.

Just connect the supply to the ignition module to a white wire at the fuse box, if there is a white wire on the coil you can used that. What red wire, is that the colour of one on module?

To see the full benefit you'd need to increase the spark plug gaps, which will probably also require the ignition retarding a tad.
