I have brought this kit http://www.mm-4x4.co...-kit-2721-p.asp
And looking to fit it tommorow. Ive got a 1982 mini mayfair 998 A+. Im pretty sure its a ballast system. can i connect the wires from the new kit to the coil or will I need a 12v feed from the fusebox?
Cheers

take a new 12V feed from the fuse box to replace the ballast one. I had to do this on my mg midget :)
You can't replace the ballast wire unless you are also changing the coil to a non ballast coil. The OP as only mentioned buying the Britpart ignition unit.
On the fuse box take the feed off the fuse with the white wire oneside , green wire the other, take the feed off the white side
Leave the coil wiring as it is, do not touch
Connect black wire from electronic ignition to coil negative, red wire connects to the new feed from the white wire side of the fuse box.

Sorry to hijack the thread, what about if you are converting from a balast coil + standard dizzy to an electric coil + dizzy, what do you do with the wiring then? I want to check I have done it right :S

That all depends on what you mean. IF you mean you want to install a factory electronic ignition dizzy with its matching electronic ignition coil, you need to install a new white wire feeding coil (+) directly from a switch terminal on the fuse box. Then there should be wires from the dizzy that connect to both coil (+) and coil (-).Sorry to hijack the thread, what about if you are converting from a balast coil + standard dizzy to an electric coil + dizzy, what do you do with the wiring then? The BritParts kit has been discussed several times before and I encourage you to use the search feature on this board to find some of those old threads.if i bought the kit the op bought, what else do i need to fit it and what do i do to fit this kit
In the meantime, suffice it to say that IF you have a standard ignition system (not ballast) with points, the installation is a straight-forward replacement of the points with the ignition module and connecting the module's 2 wires to the coil. Depending on which distributor you have there are some minor tweaks you may have to undertake to fit the module to the breaker plate in the dizzy. The information on the breaker plate is where the old threads I mentioned will come in handy.

That said... if points fail you can replace them on the side of the road at night in the rain. If an electronic ignition fails you will be calling a tow truck to get home.

If you are non ballast then connecting to the fuse box white wire is the same as connecting to the coil positive, so sounds like you wired it wrong to the fuse box.

To see the full benefit you'd need to increase the spark plug gaps, which will probably also require the ignition retarding a tad.
