The famous 'Goodyear Ultragrip' tread pattern rally tyres in 145x10 size are available again according to the latest MCR magazine and a batch of 100 have been produced by Kingpin Tyres:

KMSG 145 R10 68P

All we need now is for them to remake the classic 165/70x10 Goodyear Rally Special tarmac tyre that were the ultimate Mini tyres to have in the 1970's!

No they weren't. 5.9x10 Avon Wide Safetys were the business for tarmac road rallies.

A week, is he soft? Have a friend who wore out a front pair of Avons in a night on Mull.

The Goodyears were great. The Ultra-Grip in 145 x 10 were tops in the forests and on tarmac there was not much better than the 165 x 10 Rally Special.
I also used the original Dunlop SP3. It was said that 'SP' indicated that they were the 'Same as Pirelli'. The original Dunlop radial in Mini size was the Dunlop Duraband.
I don't recall using the 5.9 x 10 Avons, but I was not really rallying in Minis by then. When I was with Old Woking/Datsun in the 240Z we used Avon Arctic radials and they were fantastic.
I did the initial testing for Firestone U.K. on the F100 radial in the Mini size when they being developed back in '64/'65. At the time they were the smallest car tyre the company had ever produced. initially we had some sidewall issues, but when developd they were very good.
I've not used SPR3, but I have used both the SP Sport and the SP Super on Minis in rallies and both were excellent. In fact the SP Super was excellent on mixed surfaces, but could be a bit prone to punctures if not run at a fairly high pressure. From memory we used to run about 34 psi. all round.

The old Goodyear G800 was the Goodyear answer to the Dunlop SP3. A very good tyre it was too.
If the SPR3 was only in 13" I may have used them on an Escort Mk.1. Can't remember, a long time ago.
