Had my car check by a mate who told me I need a new float needle valve as the old kept sticking and causing overflow to drip petrol. I went to minispares and showed them the carb I am running and they gave me a needle kit . I now have replaced the float needle but is still
leaking fuel but runs, with the odd occasion of stalling ? Anyone know what could be wrong . Sam

It's a 1992 998cc running a hif 38 carb I have been told by minispares . Could it be the size of the needle is diffrent . As the new
one is a rubber tip the old one was a metal tip?

Replacing the needle and seat is one task. When you installed the parts there are also some float adjustments that need to be made. I don't work much with HIF carbs so others will have to tell you how to adjust the float height. Generally though the Viton (rubber) tipped needles work well, frequently better than the metal tipped valve.

Thats a float needle kit for a HS type carb not the HIF type. As a rebuild tip, always use the old seating and fit the new needle. I have found the new seats are not usually machined correctly. The result is you get a better seal using the old seat and new needle. Set the float as per your workshop manual.

EDITED:

If you have and HIF carb the float valve you need is in the kit linked below.

From the picture you posted it looks like you do have an HS series carb and what you bought should work. You will need to adjust the float height though. If you have the all plastic float that means using stacked fiber washers to move the float valve up or down as needed.

Sorry... I don't know the washer size. Frankly on carbs using the later floats I have frequently had to make my own washers out of gasket paper. As a rule though the new needle should come with a new fiber washer and I always save old ones to re-use when necessary.

ok many thanks for your help the old brass fitting did not have a washer fitted and the new kit does not come with a washer so looks like i will have to make some . So if the float is overflow would i need a lot of washers roughly .

Adding washers will "lower" the point at which the valve closes and that will help prevent flooding and overflow. I cannot predict how many you will need. You can get a general idea by referring to your manual. It will tell you how "high" the float needs to sit above the lid when the valve is properly adjusted. Knowing that, unscrew the brass seat from the lid until the adjustment is reached. Then look at the gap between the body of the brass seat and the bowl lid. That gap is how thick your stack of washers needs to be.

Washers are not used to set the float height on an HIF carb, this is completed by adjusting the float arm which operates the needle valve.
