Hi guys, i need some help, i got my shortie engine running over the weekend but i got a problem with oil leaking out of the breather

The engine is an unknown item, what we do know is that it has been rebuilt to a high spec, been told by the guy who bought the car the engine came out of it's a 1400 trackday engine only other thing we know about the engine is it has a metro turbo box and cross pin diff, and the guy spent £700 having work done on the head. and i've found out it has a very light flywheel

The engine runs fine and sounds sweet but when the oil pressure reaches 70/80 then oil starts to seep out of the filter on top of the breather

The timing cover has a 90 degree bend coming out of the case but no cannister with the wire mesh in it

Now if you take off the oil cap then it stops the oil from coming out

Any ideas

i had oil coming out of the clutch end breather which went into a catch tank

after a few laps the catch tank would be half full

it was to do with the rings apparantly

I would suggest a Manometer test on this engine. More than 2in of H2O at 6krpm with the oil cap removed means engine rebuild time. If its lower than that check for blockages (unusual).

Thanks for the reply, but to be honest i've no idea what a manometer test is, could you explain in layman terms

A manometer is a device for measuring crankcase pressure. The more wear and engine has (if the breathers are fine) the more crankcase pressure is produced. Contact MLMotorsport for more information and to conduct a test. 01474 825123.

No1 cylinder 13bar, No2 cylinder 13bar, No3 cylinder 13bar, No4 cylinder 13bar

Yer when you did the compression test did you first do it dry and then do another test with a bit of oil down the bores? if so could you give both results.

Also did you perform the test with the throttle wide open? if not please repeat the test with it open and of course dry and wet.

From what you say, I would have to say it sounds so suspiciously like the rings have gone, is it blowing any blue smoke out of the exhaust.

No blue smoke out of the exhaust, last night when testing the engine i noticed that very little oil was getting to the rocker shaft, could this be a blockage

it never really looks like there's much oil up there, as long as there is some up there you should be ok.

What about the rest of what I said?

spoke Andy at MLMotorsport what a top fella conversation went a bit like this

Hi Andy its colin we yesterday about my engine blowing out oil, you suggested a compression test

Oh yeah, what did you find?

13bar across all pistons

whats that in PSI?

oh sorry about 200psi

ok engine all ok, how many breathers do you have on the engine?

just the one, well it's just an elbow

do you have a breather at the clutch end above the drop gears?

no! why?

sounds like you have a 998 drop gear case you need a breather on your engine! so first sort that out and phone me if still playing up

What a top man, didn't know me from adam but what a fantastic attitude, if this engine needs work doing to it it will be carried out by Andy at MLMotorsport

Oh I assumed you would have had the second breather on there.

Yer that should help a fair amount, I would also ditch those terrible filters and plumb them back into the carburettor.
