I have trouble finding a reasonably priced oil over here in Sweden.

Have found the castrol classic - about 70 quid for 5 litres. Or Quaker 20 50w at roughly the same price.

However a chain over here (lets name them Swedish Halfords) do a 20 50 W mineral oil for 20 quid (5 litres). I am not sure what all the specification numbers mean, maybe someone does?

The first two letters are the petrol engine spec and the last two diesel so A2 and SJ are the only relevant ones. Have a look at this to explain http://www.driverste....co.uk/oils.htm

It will be fine. Just change it regularly 5000 km max between changes. Avoid synthetics and semi-synthetics or oils thinner than 20W50 (15W50 ok though)

Always use a 20w50 of a really good quality in the UK. Change it often, max 3000 miles between changes.

I'd never use 10/40 in a Mini. When I first bought mine I started topping it up with Castrol GTX 10W/40 after following the Rover book. From that point on the oil pressure got less and less and it started burning more and more oil.

20W/50 all the way..

hells yes

oh and if the oil actually stays in the engine, every 3k seems too often, didn't change the oil in mine for 40k and it wasn't that bad.

You have to remember that the average ambient temperature in Sweden is a little different to out 'moderate' climate in the UK.

Personally I'd be running 10/40 rather than 20/50.

Thanks guys!

Last change I used 15 50 as I couldn't put my hands on 20 50. Previous to that i used 10 40 (going by the rover spec). This time I will use the oil i found (20 50).

Guess works - I live in the very south (Malmö, beside Copenhagen) so pretty mild and the car doesn't come out of the garage below 4 celsius (no winter tyres fitted).

morris lubricants advise 10w/40 too

Morris 10/40 is a semi-synthetic isn't it? An ordinary mineral oil is better for a Mini

You mean 4k - right? 4k=4000 miles, 40k = 40,000 miles...

I suppose it's like those old ladies that smoke and drink heavily all their lives, yet still live to the age of 96. Think I'll stick to changing mine every 4 months though.
