Michael - that switch to the right of the clocks is for the later MPI Minis headlight aim adjustment - my car doesn't adjustable headlamps but the dashboard still has it, I didn't really want to take it out though!

You not fancy changing the heater to a twin speed MPI one? Or even the MPI/MGF Stalks?
I've done both in my car, basically to bring the interior a bit more up to date and they make a hell of alot of difference to the overall feel of the car, much more modern.
by the way, if you do take the headlight adjustment switch out, you're left with a blank circle and square, i was gonna wire mine up for some mood lighting, something like some discreet footwell lights.

I like your thinking on using the switch for mood lighting - perhaps something like the new new mini (mk2) with it's switch to change the mood lighting colour?!!

I did this and it must've saved me sooo much time - the screws were replaced alot of the time but I could use the old ones to compare to the new ones for length and thread etc!
Silly things like wiring too, labled up saves a nightmare when refitting!!! My piece of advise for the day!
