Hi,
I have a standard 1975 Mini 1000, and it has the standard air box with the standard air filter, I was thinking about putting a new K&N air filter in, do you think I would, for £25 notice any performance increase that would be noteworthy, or would there be better use for my £25??
Help please?!
Thanks!!

i personally wouldn't bother with the k&n replacement element as you will only see a performance gain with a k&n when it is in conjunction with a stage 1 kit.

Really, ok, my local motor factors, who didn't stock the part, but advised that it probably would slightly increase my performance, but you think different?

a k&n air filter provides more air and in turn you will have to add more fuel otherwise the engine will run too lean....and for the engine to make use of the extra air/fuel ratio the engine needs burn it and then get rid of it efficiently.................which it wont do through a standard exhaust system as it is too restrictive.

I agree with olton on this, for what its worth you wont notice a great deal of difference. If the element needs replacing then go for it as they are a quality filter but performance wise there wont be much there.

there isn't really a "cheap" way of getting performance, i would just save up for a bit and get a stage 1 kit, or even buy secondhand.....but don't use an LCB manifold on a 998 engine, get a cooper freeflow manifold, they give more torque than an LCB.
get a decent 1 3/4 exhaust and an alloy inlet, you can use this with your standard air filter for now than fit a k&n later on.
you should get the lot for less than £100 secondhand.

Personally I think most people would struggle to feel any difference by bolting a K&N filter on any engine, where it already has a clean air filter and is running well. I've had 3 on different cars and pretty sure any difference I think I felt has been imaginary. Other mods like decent manifolds, ROLLING ROAD, will see much more bang for your buck.
A session on the rollers will be best for any car as it won't affect your insurance as it's not a modification, and I bet 95% of mini's would benefit from a tune up session with noticeable difference in power and fuel economy!
