After the shambles of the £18 eBay tachometer that according to the seller won't work with Mini's (after I'd found out it didn't work!) I ordered a TIM tacho. Wired it in temporarily, green to coil -, red to + and black to earth I found it won't work at all bar a slight flicker of the needle around 0 rpm.

I think it's defective, but before I send it back does anybody have any other ideas? It's on an SPI, but I know that's not the problem as I know people with the same tachometer on SPI's.

Are you sure that you've wired it into the correct place. Maybe an picture would help.

Yes, it's on 4. Changing it just makes the flickering slower.

It's got a coil like this:

It's a ducellier if you can't read the writing. I connected the green to the left negative terminal and the red to the right positive. I also tried using an alternate 12v source, to no avail.

You typed an update while I was typing. I was going to suggest what you did... trying it on another car.

Sorry this one appears t be DOA.

EDIT: Where did you connect the black (earth) wire from the tach?

We tried it on various clean bolts in engine bay, nothing produced anything more than a ficker.

One last suggestion and I know that you have checked this before... probably multiple times.

Regardless of how the coil is marked, you want the green sense wire connected to the coil terminal where the white/black wires are connected. (This will be the coil terminal with the wire going off to the distributor).
